Athens Clarke Heritage Foundation, Inc. Monday, May 17, 1999 To: Mr. John Drew, Chief Executive Officer Dear Mr. Drew: The Athens Clarke Heritage Foundation is dedicated to the preservation of Athens' historic structures and neighborhoods, home to many Athenians who care about quality of life. We appreciate the response of Athens Regional Medical Center to concerns of the community and its immediate neighbors by withdrawing the proposed Ten and Twenty Year Future Plans. Assembling an advisory committee of neighborhood representatives and others to assist in determining alternative growth scenarios is commendable. The Athens-Clarke Heritage Foundation would like to be represented in this advisory committee. The Athens Regional Medical Center had proposed a Future Plan which has been of great concern for neighborhoods and significant historic areas. Alternative options for expansion could include redevelopment of existing, commercially zoned property, high rise development of existing structures, and/or incorporation of existing historic structures into the Athens Regional campus. The Foundation believes that such development could enhance the Normaltown commercial area, as well as preserve surrounding neighborhoods, including many historically significant homes. The Athens Clarke Heritage Foundation looks forward to working with Athens Regional and surrounding neighborhoods to develop alternatives to the proposed Future Plan. The Foundation encourages the ARMC commitment to this community. ARMC deserves commendation for planning for future growth, and we hope h will be sensitive to the concerns and commitment of its neighbors. We would be pleased to send representatives to the advisory committee or other meetings to assist in development of alternative plans which respect the community and meet the needs of Athens Regional Medical Center.
