$$ and Sense. Are 100 parking spaces necessary for a 2,000 square foot building?

One Hundred additional parking spaces are proposed along Talmadge Drive for the new Cancer Center. The Cancer Center is a 2,000 square foot building, approximately the size of three bedroom home. In the current housing market in this neighborhood the value of the 5 homes that are to be destroyed is around four to five hundred thousand dollars.

Questions:

• How many patients will actually use the 2,000 square foot cancer center at one time? Certainly not 100 carloads of patients, which means that some of these parking spaces will be used for other purposes.
• Is an unnecessary parking space worth $5,000.00?
• Could some of these homes be sold back to the community or converted into ARMC guest houses rather than being paved over and causing more runoff?
